Washington Has an Opportunity

Washington is home to one of the world's largest technology industries and has a long history of innovation.

As social media continues to shape the lives of young people, Washington has an opportunity to explore policies that encourage healthier digital environments.

Current Situation

Currently, Washington has no law comparable to New York's SAFE for Kids Act.

This means there are no statewide protections specifically addressing algorithmically curated feeds, overnight notifications, or other addictive platform features designed for minors.

A Possible Path Forward

Digital Safety WA encourages policymakers to consider legislation that would:

  • Limit addictive algorithmic feeds for minors

  • Require parental consent for personalized recommendation systems

  • Restrict overnight notifications

  • Promote healthier digital platform design

  • Balance youth protection with continued access to online communities

Protecting young people online is not about eliminating technology—it's about encouraging responsible digital design that puts youth well-being first.
